Steel Authority of India (SAIL) is a state-owned integrated steel producer operating five main plants (Bhilai, Bokaro, Rourkela, Durgapur, Burnpur/IISCO) plus specialty plants, producing flat and long steel for construction, railways (rails supplier), defence and industry. It has captive iron-ore mines but buys coking coal largely at market prices, so earnings are highly cyclical with steel spreads. Government holds majority ownership.
It is India's largest state-owned steelmaker and among the country's top steel producers by capacity.
