What MMTC does

MMTC is a government-owned trading enterprise historically engaged in the import-export of minerals, metals, precious metals (notably gold and silver bullion), fertilisers and agro products. Its once-dominant canalised trading role has shrunk substantially; the company has wound down most trading operations and its value today is associated largely with legacy assets and its stake in Neelachal Ispat Nigam-related receivables and joint ventures such as MMTC-PAMP (precious metals refining, with PAMP Switzerland). Reported revenue is a fraction of its historical peak as core trading activity has been discontinued or curtailed.

It was once India's largest trading PSU by turnover but is now largely a legacy/asset-holding entity under the Ministry of Commerce.
