City Union Bank is a Kumbakonam (Tamil Nadu)-headquartered old private-sector bank with over a century of history, focused on secured lending to MSMEs, traders and agriculture, largely in South India. It is known for conservative underwriting, a granular loan book with negligible large-corporate exposure, and consistent profitability across cycles. Earnings are driven by MSME credit demand in its home markets and its ability to maintain margins while modernising digitally.
It is one of the better-run old-generation private banks with among the highest return ratios in that cohort.
